Preserving American War Memorials Overseas

A small nonprofit organization, American War Memorials Overseas, was organized in 2008 to help document, promote, care for, and preserve overseas war memorials and gravesites that honor Americans and that do not receive support from the U.S. government.  The Web site includes a database of overseas war memorials, for which they welcome additional entries.  They publish a (roughly) quarterly one-page newsletter which includes information about war memorials and short vignettes about Americans who are buried or who died overseas.  One feature is their stories about "isolated burials", where only one or a few people are buried in a particular location.  There is also an informative FAQ about how war memorials are supported, and a list of resources, including how to maintain headstones and memorials.  I'm not sure how much of this might be duplicative of other groups' efforts, but it appears to be a well meaning organization, and the newsletter has interesting stories.

  1. I've been waiting for this website to come online, www.fallenheroesofnormandy.org (link takes you to a temporary page holder). The original date was May 1 but it's now estimated as October 1. I have a distant cousin who may be listed on the American Memorial and Garden of the Missing.

    1. Hello Sharon,

If you can forward your cousin's name and details, I will check our database for you on information we may have.

We are now aiming for 11th November 2012 launch date of new website and database. Some unforseen database problems have unfortunately delayed our progress. However, this will, initially, only include 26,000 plus burials and names commemorated in Commonwealth War Graves Commision war cemeteries, churchyards, communal cemeteries and isolated graves.

We hope to have all the other American burials, and names commemorated, in Normandy uploaded by June 2013.

You can keep up to date either on our new facebook page www.facebook.com/fallenheroesofnormandy or if you want to send me an email (if you have not already done so) to fallenheroeswebsite@gmail.com I will add you to our mailing list.

      With best wishes

  2. It looks like http://www.fallenheroesofnormandy.org/ will have some cross-over with http://www.uswarmemorials.org/, especially with the "Churchyards and Communal Cemeteries." It certainly can't hurt to have information on two different sites.

    1. Dear Janice Sellers,

There will no doubt be some cross-over with http://www.uswarmemorials.org, which will be good, as you say, for everyone cross-checking information and data.

We are however, presently still collating information and details on all those Americans who were killed in Normandy and who were repatriated back to the USA. Data that presently is not avaiable anywhere else online.

Our provisional target for publishing this data is 2015, as we are still appealing for any information. Any appeals you or your colleagues may be pass on with regards obtaining information about any American killed in Normandy and subsequently repatriated to the USA would be most appreciated.

As would any appeals for any information or photographs of any American servicemen, or women, killed in Normandy.

please forward any information or photographs to fallenheroeswebsite@gmail.com

All contributor to the website database archive will be duly acknowledged.

      Thank you

      With best wishes

      Carl
